Hello! Seeing Delivery Hopper featured has felt really amazing! Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to try the game!
I've been tweaking some of the mechanics to improve balance, but I'm conflicted regarding the rain system. When it rains, sideways hops count as two because the road is slippery. I like the idea of weather hazards, but the game already has many mechanics working at once. Even as the developer, I most often forget to consider the rain modifier when I play. I worry that if I forget, then it could be frustrating to new players.
I've considered making hops slower in the rain, obscuring visibility slightly, adding a deployable umbrella, or also just removing rain altogether.
I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions, I'm doing my best to polish the game as much as I can.
- I'd like it if you made it so the music transition was faster, there is an amount of time when one song transitions to the next one, where there's a lot of dissonance because they are playing on top of each other. - Sometimes when I'm moving horizontally, I seem to move two spots instead of one, and it gets me killed sometimes - I think the requirements for certain deliveries (ie: no double sidestep) are poorly communicated and frustrating at times - It's weird you can accept a delivery that you're not capable of moving backwards to actually accept - I don't understand what it means to stay in the shade in this game
The game has a very strong vibe. The aesthetics are very strong.
These are excellent points, thank you! - I see what you mean with the transitions, I hadn't noticed before. - The horizontal movement thing is probably because of the rain which I think I'm going to remove effects for. When I consciously think about the rain mechanic I can do okay, but often forget so I imagine new players are having the same issue. - I agree that the communication for the food items is pretty weak. I didn't want to over explain or have the game ramp up too slowly so I tried to make it so there's sort of multiple win (fun) conditions. I've noticed in the leaderboard tracking some players ignore the food delivery completely and just go for distance scores, that can still be fun so I didn't want to overly broadcast failure to a player who could be having a good time. I also want to reward players who are looking for an even greater challenge. I'll experiment with this some more but I want to avoid game pausing pop-ups and the UI is already pretty busy. The simple answer could be slightly reducing the penalty sound. - I've experienced this with multiplayer when I've been ahead of the group but not in single player, but I've been staring at this so long I'm just in the habit of pressing accept immediately on every order. I can add some protections for this. - The shade concept is a bit of leftover from a more pronounced shadow look I had before that didn't look as nice. Basically there's more heat on you when you're on uncovered pavement than in the spaces between buildings so waiting for traffic clearings a couple steps back could cause items to stay cool longer.
Thank you so much for taking the time, I'll work this into my next update!
Hello! Finding Delivery Hopper initially was like striking gold, and it was a no-brainer pushing it onto the Featured page. I boot it up for a few runs every time I'm on s&box now!
From a player perspective, Fantastic hit all the notes pretty perfectly for me. I agree with you that all the mechanics working in tandem can get a bit overwhelming, but the general game concept is easy enough to jump into that the specific delivery instructions can go into the background without much worry, for better or worse. In that vein, I guess it's very approachable but hard to master, which is a good place to be in.
I do think that with some UI exploration, you could make delivery instructions clearer, but it's hard to know what it could look like as it'd probably need to be a bit more centralized, which impedes on the super clean look you've achieved already. I ain't no UI guy so that's a bit outta my league lol
Either way, great work again and I'll be keeping an eye out for updates!
