Party Goobers has officially released!

Speaking on the release of my Game Jam entry
Party goobers is a one-button party game where you and your friends compete in earning the highest scores in a series of rounds. The objective changes from round to round, and it's your job to be quick witted and to pay attention!
The quicker you complete the objective, the higher your score.

You can join up to 24 other friends online to compete towards the highest score! Between rounds you can view the scoreboard to see how you have done in the rankings so far, and how your score has changed since last round.
If you haven't picked up on it yet, Party Goobers has been heavily inspired by the Mii era of Nintendo games. Goobers are my replacement for Mii's, and during my development I realised just how fun it is to play and work with a set of unique looking characters, and I think there is a lot of potential to this core idea that I haven't yet touched on in Party Goobers.

Growing up with Nintendo during the Wii era, Miis are a big part of my childhood and I've played many games featuring them. One of these games was Wii Play, a collection of mini-games that incorporate Miis to various degrees. Two of the games included in the collection was 'Find Mii' and 'Shooting Range'. Party Goobers follows the general formula of 'Find Mii', where you have to... Find specific Miis in varying scenes. I look that formula, incorporated the Shooting from 'Shooting Range', and sprinked some of my own ideas on top.
I have learned a lot working on Party Goobers. This was my first time modelling, rigging and animating a character that ended up in a final product. I took a lot of shortcuts to get there (Quick Rig, Mixamo), but without these shortcuts I doubt I would have finished in time, if at all.

If I were to remake the game or use Goobers in future games knowing what I do now, I would probably swap out the camera-facing face feature sprites to 3D models, something that would make the overall look more visually cohesive. 3D models would get rid of a lot of issues I had with the sprites, such as clipping into the character models or difficulties and inconsistencies in color-matching to the 3D model color.

In my experience, if you're coming up towards a deadline (such as in a Game Jam), there will always be some spaghetti code to get things done, but other than that I'm proud of what Party Goobers is.
There are still some blindspots for me as of writing this. I haven't actually tested Party Goobers with another human being, or had more than two clients in a game at the same time. Because if this, I'm in fear that everything will be broken when people start playing, but it will probably be fine. Maybe this is another lesson for me to learn.
