Beta Release

The Vidya Editor is meant to be like Happy Wheels/Garry's Mod on crack, taking full advantage of s&box's UGC features. We're trying to strike the perfect balance between ease of use and powerful features. It's the spirit of Sandbox using the power of s&box.

It's like Happy Wheels where you'll be able to browse fun creative user-made levels with ease, and also like GMod where you don't need any technical ability to just plop down some models/entities/weapons you downloaded and mess around on those levels(but without having to reload!).

Here's a video of a map being loaded and a player controller being placed.
You select a map(currently only non-scene) just by pressing "Level" at the top right, clicking the "Maps" tab, then searching and clicking on it.

If you want to run around in it you just place a character controller(FPS only currently) and press Play(G key by default).
Play levels by others. Share up to 10 of your own.
We plan to improve this of course but it's already functioning how you'd expect.
You can create objects(within objects) and then add and configure pre-made components, features which only made sense seeing as that's also how the engine this was built upon works.

The huge benefit of this kind of system is that it allows you to break down the old way where you have specialized systems with limited interactivity into many different pieces that allow far more variation. We are taking full advantage of this.

Put simply: it takes an "Entity" with limited options and converts it to a bunch of puzzle-like pieces(components) of functionality that you can do sooo much more with, if you want. Or you can just use what others have made and change a few things. Hence the "GMod on crack" phrase.

Think of a car in GMod. Not much to customize there unless you want to get knee deep into archaic text file editing and GLua. Now imagine it you could spawn it the same way and play with it as-is, or you could click on any part of it and change its model/color/handling. You can add/subtract wheels, just fully customize it basically and then save it for later and even share it without leaving this tool. That is the difference.
It'll have what you need to do things like you would in s&box's ActionGraph.

Shlako's been cooking.. It'll greatly expand the capabilities of this tool, well beyond the suite of components and templates/prefabs we plan on adding that will make it easy to make the kinds of experiences you want.

Worried that it will be too technical for you? Don't be, because we also plan on letting users share scripts they've made that you can just search up and change around to your liking without fully understanding them. Search, look, click, fiddle, learn.

Cope Alert:
There have been a lot of largely life-related issues getting in the way, so we haven't been able to deliver it before the due date unfortunately, but we'll be working on it during the judging period and will hopefully get it in your hands soon along with an example level you can play through the level browser.
You think this is it? Nah.
What's an engine within an engine if you don't overscope the heck out of it?

Dunno how much we'll actually get around to, but..

Planned:
  • Custom UI support in visual scripting.
  • Voxel Level Editor/Workflow
  • Mesh Editor/Workflow
  • Multiplayer (lobbies!)
  • Mario Maker-like Workflow
  • Prefab System (with online sharing!)
  • Fully customizable component-based particles.
  • Stuff for shooter/driving/platforming/tower defense etc. games.
  • Whatever else our insane minds decide to add to the pile.
Visit the Vidya Editor page for (hopefully)up-to-date images/videos, or to give us feedback/suggestions.
