Can we talk about the prices of the latest skins that have been released? I am opening this thread FOR DISCUSSION due to the latest skin released called “Skull Helmet,” which costs $14.99, and well, in addition to the others that have been released at a high price.
On the other hand, I would also like to invite you to DISCUSS the period of time during which these skins can be purchased.
Regarding the latter, I would like to say that if they are going to set such high prices, I would expect these skins to be available for purchase only within 7 days of their release on the market.

Seems like they are just testing the waters.

Anecdotally, anything over $15 and I am starting to question whether I can afford to be buying two of every drop for my collection.

Pretty ridiculous. In Fortnite you get a full skin with variations for the same price

I would not be surprised if he would make skins for like 20$ or even high as 100$, just to test how hard can you squeeze the scalpers.

Too bad, if they're testing it out, in my opinion, it won't work out for them, although they won't lose anything. But I'd like to point out that buying/selling activity in the market is very low, meaning that if consumption of “cheap” skins is already almost zero, what can we expect from skins that are expensive? It occurs to me that these skins that cost over $15 would be bought by investors, but buying them would be, so to speak, a death sentence, because it's too likely that no one will buy them, given the current level of stagnation.

Probably because the game has a thousandth of the future active playerbase.....

That is the more surprising. They are actively removing skins from storefront for a game whose player base has not arrived yet. Each popular skin that wont be on storefront at launch will be a loss for a S&box and devs here

1. Doesn't matter; Market always correct itself if the item never coming back. Someone will always pick up the crown from the sewer if the liquidity and spread is good.

2. This game/engine is essentially in Alpha. People buying items now for speculation, and as throphies to show and say you were early, it's like having a runescape party hat or old roblox items from the early days.

3. Skins that are not on the storefront at launch are NOT a loss for Facepunch nor any third party involved with the creation of the asset. They receive percentages from the sales from the community marketplace.

S&Box cannot match the popularity of CS2 at all, and there is no core gameplay worth playing, so the value of skins cannot be recognized by people

To a certain extent, it is acceptable to console ourselves with the idea that the current number of players is nothing compared to what it will be in the future. But let's be honest, there are more than 50,000 people on Discord and around 150 players connected per day (the peak has been 1,000 people in one day), I think we are being very positive with that idea. I think that instead of testing skin prices, developers should take steps to encourage people to play, because all this does is cause the Steam market to stagnate more and more.

I've seen what Garry posted. I want to know what you think about it.

For my part, I'd like to point out that his point of view is understandable, but it should be noted that this is quite difficult, as none of the skins available are any different from the rest. In my opinion, all the skins that have been published to date are nothing special, except that some are more expensive than others, but there is nothing to encourage buying a more expensive one instead of a cheaper one, since they are all the same.
On the other hand, it is somewhat contradictory to what he mentions, because if he has a certain vision of wanting prices to be high, why does he decide to intervene in certain skins? For example, with the tattoo skins, given your statement, I think you should change your mind and not put them back on sale.
Similarly, in terms of creating “scarcity,” if you want to do that, you should promote that the skins are only available for 7 or 14 days and not for a whole month to purchase them.

The items will inevitably always end up back on the Steam Community Market at some point. Any time that they touch that market and are transacted on there - Facepunch gets a cut and is expected to disperse it down to the creators of the asset. This should be common sense.

All depends on availability on different platforms. As mentioned already - you are COMPLETELY DISREGARDING the facts that:
  • The game/player currently has no way to downscale to run on older machines
  • The game itself is not available on the steam client. You need to venture here and find the button to add it after logging in with steam. This initself is a huge filter.
  • The editor to make games is constantly having huge changes made to it. Anyone who hasn't been involved with the source ecosystem or straight up Rust or GMOD development, won't be too incited to look here and spend dozens of hours learning the editor workflow only for key functions to change the next week.
  • Because of the aforementioned, there are not may in-depth experiences currently. Only a handful of people are making games.

@iGaming It doesn't look like you know how 3rd party websites work. They are better for large quantity trading cuz they don't have steams  15%. There are other reasons why they are preferred like for example hard hat will not be marketable on steam market due to its value. It will reach a point where it is just dumb to sell it on steam market dude to its rarity and real price, for example dragon lore is 12,750 max you can have on steam is 2,000.  You just don't sell dragon lore on steam market  xD

Thank you @¤Munoz i just read post too idk why they keep leaning into FOMO and creating its own economy so hard even if community dislikes it. there are other way to market things too, sell hats on timed rotations, give them sales time to time, giving hats unusual effects if you buy them now, monetizing community skins differently than the official ones. There are options. Thees options haven't bin explored yet conclusion are made.

It would be an accomplishment to genuinely have items which people seek out to pay that much for.

idk why they keep leaning into FOMO and creating its own economy so hard even if community dislikes it.

You have no clue what you want until you are shown it fully functioning.

And since this duck wants to keep yapping:

There are extremely easy ways for the third party sites to implement distribution of percentages to developers of the items as well, depending on how the market develops and if the popularity comes to the platform - the option would be there for third party sites. There are way more important things to worry about here than monetization problems. Facepunch could develop incentives for these "partners" to implement payment distributions for parties involved with not just asset creation that are on the steam community market, but even items which could be used in creation of experiences (models, textures, scripts, and plugins designed solely for sbox and which the creator would want monetized).

S&box Player 1 5 months ago edited 5 months ago
Those who invest in Sbox skins now will see in 2-3 years what a right decision they made. Paper Hands can sell their skins now if they wish :)
Who do not want you to invest now are greedy people. All they want is to buy the main stock of skins, manipulate them and sell them at a high price when the new player base reaches them. Meanwhile, they can do this more easily if you don't have skin :)
It doesn't matter the current prices of the skins in the steam market, the full version of the Sbox is not even released yet, please don't be stupid :D

It is not right to compare Sbox with CS. Since there will most likely not be a skin drop system in Sbox (at least limited in game store  skins) , if you have the opportunity, buy the skins even if it is 5 dollars or 20 dollars.  Of course, it would be better if prices were accessible to everyone.

I make all my comments sincerely, I have been in the CS2 skin market for more than 10 years and rest assured, I have more knowledge and experience than anyone here.

I hope that Garry will comment on this again in his next blog post, taking this thread into account. The discussion has become interesting both before and after the publication of the last blog post.
Finally, regarding third-party sites for selling skins, in my opinion it would be a big plus for sbox's internal commerce (Steam), whether they are sites for buying/selling or for trading, as it would encourage trade and greatly boost the current economy, which is really too stagnant. Personally, I am seriously considering stopping investing because, given the current context, there are no sales and I see no incentives to increase the number of active players.

The people who act like we're fucking them with FOMO have never truly been fucked.

Truly a quote of all time.

This is better than how CS2, TF2, Fortnite, Valorant, etc. handle cosmetics. We’re getting exactly what the community has been asking for: non–loot box, non–gambling cosmetics, tradable cosmetics, community cosmetics, etc. If you’re whining that they’re doing this before the game’s release, the future active player base, which will be orders of magnitude larger, will be laughing at your posts for whining instead of buying. If you want these cosmetics to use on your character, buy them. If not, don’t. Simple as that.

@Jonny its crazy to say that the people are not getting fucked and then defend fomo. Yeh he isn't full on fucking peeps like blizzard and using all abusive marketing tricks, but only giving the tip ,using only 1 trick.

If the money is so hard needed then go ahead and use them all add loot boxes, bundles and all the good stuff.  In the end skins are not essential but money for game is.

If i had to guess people are mad about not committing to a either a path like LOL 2015( pre loot boxes and timed battle passes) you can buy skins any time and SOME are reoccurring seasonal and they didn't go bankrupt or like COD just use every abusive tactic and make buttload of money and ignore players.  If you go down the middle road you will seem like you are trying to look good and listen to players and not going for all the tactics but unfortunately at the same time you will get the negative press about using abusive marketing.

Not sure why there's so much pushback over this.
Rust has tons of skins you cant even buy that are FOMO from Twitch drops yet it doesnt really matter because they eventually add alternatives.

With S&ndbox they are literally telling you which items are going to be worth more and all you have to do is choose if you want to invest in them.
As for the higher prices, I think $20 or $25 should be the maximum price of anything and that should be a complete limited time outfit price.
With almost every limited drop the price of the item has doubled after it stopped being on sale, and since they give you a ton of time to get them before they're gone I just dont see how this is an issue.

It's literally a Win / Win for everyone involved.

If I could add my two cents, I would like to say that selling skins at high prices, like anything above 5 usd/eur/gbp feels less like a "development upkeep" cost and more like a "lets get some profit" cost.

I fully support the idea of a normal pricing scale like (0.99–4.99) based on skin quality or rarity. That makes sense and still supports the games development. But when a purely cosmetic item costs 8.99, 15.99, or even 25.99, it stops being about “funding development” and starts looking like “charging more simply because people will pay”.

Just think about all the complete indie games with months or years of development behind them for under 5 usd/eur/gbp. Now compare that to a single cosmetic skin for an early-access game.

I agree with the previous comment.

I think certain criteria should be established for pricing skins. Personally, I would pay $15 for a skin like this one https://sbox.game/zedskipper/devilwings but not for the one that was published, as it has nothing special about it and isn't even visually appealing. Another idea would be to give certain skins effects like in TF2, to distinguish them from the others, which would justify them being more expensive or something like that...

I hope the developers speak up in the next blog, because personally, I find their decision to remain silent on the forum very disappointing

@🐀 Thts the problem no one is asking for skin economy, why have investing. We already have Hawk Tuah coins and crypto rugpulls for that.  You gotta remember skins are not a way to invest into a company, you don't buy iPhone to invest into apple, they could just as well tomorrow say "hey, all skins will return to store" (sames as tattoo skins) and there would be NO legal repercussion for them.

If you go into it fomo is not really a win win. As a s&box In a long term you will earn less money from limited time skins.  Especially making limited time skins before releasing the game to main paler base is just dumb. Morally it is same as having loot boxes, it plays on your brain.

@Depreee birdy To find right price you would need to look for that sweet spot where the price and demand meet, but you cant find it out with too many scalpers on market.

its clear that you can buy skins to support the game without any intention of making a profit or in case of... making big profits. but lets be honest, the skin system allows the game to develop, and a coherent response to all this is necessary, because whether we like it or not, the fact that there are “investors” within the ecosystem is already established, and in the end, everyone will have to be satisfied, but well...

This is where you start to show that you completely misunderstand a lot about how the world works in general. Stop talking about these things and focus on your homework for the weekend.

In the same way that someone would choose to purchase lots of runescape items to attempt to trade P2P, or Telegram gifts to trade P2P, or steam gift cards, or fortnite skins, or fortnite vbucks, or roblox items, or roblox robux - THEY ARE CHOOSING TO INVEST INTO THE ECOSYSTEM. THEY CHOOSE TO GO TO THESE PLATFORMS BECAUSE THE TEAM/COMPANY BUILDING THESE EXPERIENCES FOR DECADES HAVE REACHED A POINT OF PERFECTION, LIKE A CHEF PERFECTING A DISH UNTIL IT'S FIT FOR A 5 STAR RESTAURANT.

SOMEONE CHOOSES TO BUY AN IPHONE BECAUSE THEY ARE INVESTING INTO THE APPLE ECOSYSTEM. THEY TRUST AND BELIEVE THAT APPLE WILL CONTINUE DOING THINGS WHICH WILL BRING NOTHING BUT INHERENT POSITIVES TO THEIR LIVES RATHER THAN BEING A TOY. PEOPLE USE PHONES TO MAKE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS NOWADAYS, EDITING CONTENT, FILMING ENTIRE MOVIES, TV SHOWS, RECORDING AUDIO FOR MEDIA, MUSIC, AND MUCH MORE.

STOP TALKING.

LOL.

I think the discussion has gotten a bit out of hand here when you start using all caps to make a point. You can disagree in a civilized manner and still defend your argument.

The original question imposed was regarding the price and time limitation and I think everyone has already provided their opinion and now are just settling personal opinion beef.

At the end of the day it really is out of our control and the only way it changes is if the creators of S&box decide to just do a 180 and take a closer look at the way they price items. I would argue that their stance is firm by the fact that they have a FAQ regarding this specific topic and the words used and tone in which it is written.

@iGaming You totally misunderstood my point. There are better ways to invest into company thees days then investing into products, by becoming investor and not a consumer. There is difference in investing straight into company and just buying its products. Like Cs go skin traders weren't so happy when they invested in ecosystem.
People currently are hoping to scalp the market. There is rust - huge game, garrys mod - huge game, what will S&box be ? Don't you think others don't see it too, like the " investor " who bought 500 shark heads ?
Toward the end you didn't look so good, u ok there man ?

can you sell you fortnite skins on a market after to make money? i dont think you can. as garry said in the new update. every single market in the world is like this and stop complaining about it. if you cant afford/dont like the prices of these items, then dont buy them. nobody has a gun to your head telling you to buy them.
