Consensus about the Sprite Rendering system?

I started this thread because I’m confused about whether my PR will be handled and about sbox’s current support for Sprites. In my view:

sbox’s current support for Sprite is quite rough: the hard-to-use .sprite asset system, the inability to specify a frame index for a sprite in the editor, and the completely unclear 2D physics (Box2D, maybe off-topic btw). A viable option for handling these things is to code corresponding management scripts. Then, custom shader effects for Sprites cannot be solved by writing code unless a custom Sprite Rendering system is implemented in the game project; for this reason, I submitted a PR to make it extensible for custom shader effects.

I don’t know whether my PR conforms to community norms, whether the sbox team will accept it, what the community’s attitude toward the sprite system is, whether anyone is working on a more complete sprite system, whether there are likewise developers in the community who need sprites or whose needs for sprites differ, and what suggestions and thoughts developers in the community have about the current sprite rendering system.

Say whatever you want to say; plz let me know!

Carson was working on Tilesets, Autotiling and other sprite features, but sadly they're on hold now. Check out the roadmap. I think this is because S&box adjusted course. ⛵

When i was working on my gamejam entry, there was a bug: When selecting multiple SpriteRenderer they all changed their .sprite to the one first selected.
Not sure if I'm stupid, but that was VERY annoying. 😡

Aren't the 2D physics toggleable in the project settings? I haven't used them. I locked Rigidbodies and locked the player to x = 0.

I hope 2D gets some love, but i understand it's not a focus for the development right now. 😥
