A faithful recreation of the prerendered visuals of Riven (1997), rendered on demand as the player progresses through the world.

Notable features include:
  • 608 x 392 rendering: Instead of the normal full resolution render with a mosaic effect to downscale it, the game is rendered at the target resolution of 608x392 then scaled up using normal texture sampling to deliver the more faithful blurry look (and also better performance).
  • Cached renders: The game is not rendered every frame, instead only a single frame is rendered each time the player reaches an area they haven't been to before (unless there is a video element on screen, in which case the game is only rendered at 15 fps).
  • Transitions: the classic fade and slide transitions, it's like you're really moving in 3d!
  • Image compression: 'Static' image elements are treated with inverted bayer dithering and bit reduction to closely match the image compression in the original games.
  • Cropped video elements: animated objects are rendered separately and displayed to the screen in cropped rectangles. The bounds for these elements are calculated dynamically.
  • Video compression: post processing effects that emulate block compression, color distortion, and p-frames on video elements get the videos to be decently similar to the video compression in the originals.
