With the announcement of Valves new hardware I'm curious what you guys think about the implications of the Steam Machine and Frame for S&box. I haven't found a post disscussing them here - surprising.

First, both are expected to be released in the first half of 2026. Coincidence? 🤔

Second, the big roadblock for S&box on the Steam Machine is SteamOS, which is based on Linux. This shouldn't affect players, because the game runs through proton, but the editor would be greatly missed on the Steam Machine. Is this motivation for Facepunch to make the editor work on SteamOS?
The playmode was just updated and leading to more Linux compatibility - just after the hardware announcement. Coincidence? 🤔

VR - with S&box having native VR and Valve launching a new VR headset they could create a new hype for VR and the problem of "No Games" could be solved with S&box. I think this could be dynamite. Easy to create and access VR games coupled with an accessible, high quality headset may seriously change the VR landscape. The Sandbox gamemode already has seamless switching between conventional and VR mode. The Steam Frame supposed to be no setup - just put it on and enjoy VR.  🧨🧨🧨

Give me your opinions! Which coincidences did you notice? 😉

the biggest issue with the editor was the game frame not being accessible on linux, I believe the latest update to adjust the game frame to being tied to the active scene and allowing ejecting to the scene should've solved this (at least per matt.) If that is the case, i don't see why it wouldn't run on the steam machine. steam frame is a different story as this game isn't made for arm so we'd be at the mercy of the FEX translation layer, which since we have source2 as a base, I'd assume would work, but because there's heavy modification, so maybe not. I'd make an educated guess that in order to play on the steam frame you'd have to stream it from the steam machine or another computer with the usb Wi-Fi dongle.

I've been running S&box on Linux for well over a year now and it's nearly flawless (On Nvidia, yes Nvidia is fine on Linux....). I see no reason why there would be any regressions from here.

Literally the only issue I experience is the emojis are missing. Could probably fix that with a ProtonFix though. The editor has issues but it's improving afaik.

I suspect VR will be working, or at least won't be limited by Linux/Proton by the time Steam Frame is shipping. I could be wrong.

I have to say my OP sounds gloomy, but it wasn't meant to be. I was not fully aware of Linux support and only heard about issues with the editor. I'm glad they are fixed now!

I think the future is bright for S&box on Linux and also on Valves new hardware, especially S&box VR. 🧱🚀

I know a native client build is kinda a pipe dream at this point. But man it would be insanely appreciated given Valve's direction and the fact that it's already Vulkan.

Quoting myself from another Post:

SteamOS support for S&Box would be awesome tbh. When FP focuses on proton fixes instead of in-engine fixes, we will be in a better state overall for gaming with S&Box on Steam Machines.

While not planned (I think) to be around the same time as the Steam Machine. It'll be such a shame if it released on a unstable factor for it.

Also if it's paid, but especially if it's gonna be free to play, it would be an amazing replacement for big hub games like Fortnite that lack Linux support (Although I would get FP not wanting to be called the Fortnite of Steam).

Not that it matters tho as with these pc parts price hikes no way that the Steam Machine would be affordable for an average console gamer.

I'd consider already stable aside from a couple minor bugs with fonts.
