Skins & Playfund

I’m a bit worried about how the skins and the playfund might play out long term.

From my understanding the idea behind the playfund is great. Players buy official skins, that money helps fund developers, and in return we get more and better games. It’s a solid ecosystem on paper.

The concern I have is that developers aren’t required or really encouraged to use the official store skins in their games. A popular game could just use completely custom models or its own cosmetic system and ignore the official skins entirely. If that becomes common, those skins don’t actually show up in the games people are playing.

If players don’t see their skins being used, they have less reason to buy them. If skins don’t sell, the playfund doesn’t grow much. And if the playfund doesn’t grow, there’s less financial incentive for developers to keep building and updating games.

I’m not saying anyone should be forced to support official skins. But it does feel like there needs to be some kind of incentive to tie everything together. Otherwise the system might not reinforce itself the way it’s meant to.

I think games will naturally want to use player skins, and players will naturally avoid games that don't use them.

Yea I agree, I think just based on players alone they will most likely opt for a game where they can show off their purchased customization.

Hate the Roblox comparison schtick but all the popular games tend to have a mixture of custom models and integrating skins, because that's what people like. I imagine this will happen here too

Yep. Developing our game with that in mind so people can flex their cosmetics
