Let's talk about the Developer Preview revoke - and the narrative some people are trying to spin
I want to address something that's been bothering me about the backlash surrounding the revoked Developer Preview access on the forums and especially outside (Reddit).
First, let's be clear about what it was: a Developer Preview. A beta. A preview. Not a purchase, not a promise, not a lifetime license. The word "preview" is right there in the name.
Garry and Facepunch never stated anywhere that preview access would automatically carry over into a free copy at launch. The game is launching on April 28th at a price comparable to Garry's Mod - which, by any standard, is fair for what s&box is offering.
The narrative flip
What I'm seeing now is a textbook case of entitlement creep, and it's worth calling out:
- "I put hundreds of hours into this, so I deserve free access" - You also got hundreds of hours of free entertainment and development time out of it. That's not a debt Facepunch owes you, that's a benefit you already received.
- "I was actively developing something, so they can't just cut me off" - Developing on a free preview platform is not a contract. It's a privilege that was always explicitly temporary.
- "They should have warned us" - The launch date and pricing have been publicly discussed for months.
What Garry actually did
Out of 800,000 preview users, 40,000 get to keep access for free. That includes:
- Developers with published games that have actual playtime
- Anyone who bought cosmetics/MTX
- Players with significant hours who opened the game recently
The MTX criteria makes complete sense. If you spent money on the platform, there's a real financial relationship there, that's a fair and reasonable threshold.
Facepunch handled this transparently and generously, all things considered. If you're upset you didn't get a free copy of a game you never paid for, that's not injustice, that's just how a product launch works.
