Core Gameplay

Massive gap between what I think is fun and what is actually fun

In the initial versions of the Mindful idea, the core gameplay was keeping your eyes shut all the time. A black screen with a timer. Maybe a game of Snake.

The idea was to make sounds and gestures to trick others into opening their eyes and getting caught.

But incentives always win: You could just keep your eyes closed for half an hour and win the game.

So instead, I decided to reward the player when they're looking at the teacher while he's meditating. This required a red light/green light mechanic, obviously inspired by Squid Games, where the teacher intermittently goes "HM!", looks up, and catches the player.

XP gained during that sitting is nullified, and the player is kicked back to the waiting hall.

Brutal. But suddenly a lot more fun.
