Character Kit
The reusable library behind
Character Editor. It expands Facepunch’s default human models into one customizable character system that you can use in your own s&box project.
What it includes
- Blending between seven existing faces and the male and female bodies.
- Optional blends for individual face regions, plus face and body shape controls.
- Skin selection and colors, hair, makeup, tattoos, and other markings.
- Automatic fitting for human clothing, including clothing with only one gender version.
- Support for separate male and female clothing versions and an optional version preference.
- Character randomization using the same algorithm as the demo.
- Appearance JSON import and export, including saved photo-guided faces.
- An optional character editor and saved-character library UI.
Clothing can come from your project or the cloud. The starting clothing list isn’t a restriction on what the character can wear.
Using it
Install Character Kit through s&box’s Library Manager, then add its Editable human prefab to your scene.
The prefab exposes the native SkinnedModelRenderer, Dresser, and CitizenAnimationHelper, alongside the customization component. It uses the existing human skeleton and animation setup, so you can connect it to your player or NPC code. Movement controls aren’t included.
The character component lets you load exported JSON, randomize an appearance, and refresh the character. Clothing remains editable through the Dresser.
You can make characters in the standalone Character Editor and use their JSON here, include the supplied editor in your game, or build your own interface around the appearance system.
A few limits
Automatic fitting isn’t cloth simulation, and extreme shapes or poses can still cause clipping. Appearance changes affect the rendered model, not its collision shape.
Saved photo-guided faces render without the online analyzer. Creating new ones requires network access.
Assets and reuse
The original human models, textures, clothing, and other Facepunch assets belong to Facepunch and retain their existing usage terms.
Anything new I’ve made for this project, including the code and original additions, is free to use, modify, and include in your own projects. No credit to me is required. Facepunch is welcome to use or reference these additions too.
