Shout out to everyone who submitted suggestions for the app! (S&Box Reddit and S&Box Reviews)
Please remember when reviewing the app that the "Shows Promise" button counts negatively and hinders discoverability.
If you feel bad about the game please tell me why so we can change it, but it seems like many people genuinely love what I've made and click that damn button without knowing it hurts.
Distortion types - Choose Warm, Hard, Fuzz or Fold, with new Tone and Mix knobs
Track echo - Every track has its own echo with Echo amount, tempo-synced Time (1/32 to 1/2, dotted and triplet), Repeats and Ping-Pong
Automation tab - Make volume, pan, filters, EQ, drive, crush, chorus, echo and reverb/delay sends change over the song
Draw automation - Click to add points, drag to move them, right-click to delete, Clear to start over
Write mode - Turn on Write and move a knob while the song plays to record it
Credits - Every song and every sound you make now records who made it and when, taken from your Steam account
Co-creators - Anyone who edits a song, on their own or in a live session, is added as a co-creator next to the original creator
Friend-only sharing - Share files and codes open only for the friends you pick
Share permissions - Choose Listen only or Can edit for each share
Credits in exports - WAV, MP3, FLAC and MIDI exports include the song title, everyone credited and the date
EQ - Set the Low, Mid and High band frequencies and the Mid band width
Shared songs are always copies - Opening a share makes your own copy, so the creator's original is never changed
Share protection - Shares that have been edited by hand are blocked from opening
Friend picker - Friends you've jammed with appear automatically; add others by pasting their Steam ID or profile link
Baked sounds keep credits - Save as sound keeps the song's credits and adds your name
Custom sound streaming - Big sounds are shrunk to fit and sent a little at a time, so sessions don't stall
Sound transfer messages - Shows "Getting...", "Got..." or "Couldn't get..." while a friend's sound downloads
Friends couldn't hear your sounds - Long imported sounds were too big to send and never reached your collaborators
Stalled sounds - A missing sound is now requested again up to 3 times instead of just once
Host could start twice - Starting a session freezes the game for a few seconds; clicking again during that started a second session. Now shows "Starting session..." and ignores extra clicks
The Character section no longer holds Drive - It moved to the new Distortion section with its new controls
Credit protection is inside Studio Box only - Other apps can edit or remove the names in exported WAV/MP3 files
Old shares - Share files and SBX2.0 codes made before this update don't have a friend lock or permissions
Very long sounds - Very long imported sounds are sent to collaborators at lower quality so they fit (It's best to share the original sound with the person you want to collab with).
MIDI still isn't possible via S&Box the way we need it. There are ways to implement it but at the cost of serious lag, depreciation of velocity and limited octaves among other things. I tried to approach this by looking at building a WebSocket Link to a companion app but S&Box refuses localhost connections.
If more people use the app the fix is more than likely to publish to steam.
If studio box was distributed via steam instead, we could implement these features plus many more...
Music and audio:
Real MIDI input: all keys, velocity, sustain pedal, pitch bend, mod wheel and knobs, plus MIDI-learn (map any controller knob to any on-screen control).
MIDI output: drive hardware synths and drum machines, or sync tempo with other apps.
Audio interfaces: pick your interface, use ASIO for very low latency, and choose the sample rate and buffer size.
Multi-input recording: record more than one mic or instrument at once, with real monitoring.
VST/VST3 plugins: run third-party synths and effects.
ReWire, or sending audio to OBS or other apps.
Files:
Save anywhere: export straight to the Desktop or Music folder through normal Open/Save windows, and drag and drop files from Explorer into the app.
More formats: read more import formats directly (AIFF, M4A, and FLAC import), plus stems from other DAWs.
Project folders: real folders that sit next to the user’s other music projects.
Social and sharing:
Steam friends API: a real friend picker, invites, and direct sends to a friend.
Steam Workshop: a public place to post beats, kits and sounds, with creator credit built in and ratings.
Steam Cloud: saves follow you to other PCs.
Your own server: an offline delivery queue for friend shares, accounts, and stronger protection of creators’ work.
Performance and the desktop:
Native code: faster DSP, more voices and effects, and multi-threaded mixing.
Desktop app behavior: multiple windows and monitors, and a proper app menu.

Rename or delete your own items - right-click anything you made or imported in the browser
Import your own MIDI files - put .mid files in the import folder or use the new Import MIDI button; they appear under MIDI > My MIDI
Build a song from a MIDI file - double-click a multi-part file to get one track per part, lined up at the file's tempo, with the closest instrument for each part
Drum patterns from MIDI - drop a MIDI drum part on a drum track and its kick, snare, hats, toms and cymbals land on the right pads
Controller mode - a toggle on the keyboard strip for MIDI keyboards like the Akai MPK Mini via a key-mapper app: Z..I play two octaves, 1 4 8 9 0 A F K play the drum pads, arrow keys change octave and velocity
Click to audition - instruments play a note, kits play through their pads, riffs play with your selected track's sound; previews stop when you move away or click something else
Drag feedback - while dragging, the target lights up green when it fits or red with the reason, and a hint next to the cursor says what will happen
Replace prompt - dropping an instrument or kit on an existing track asks before replacing its sound
Share files - save a song plus every custom sound it uses into one .sbshare file to send to friends

Steam avatars for everyone in the session, plus join, leave and new-host messages
Co-op walkthrough - first-time guide where every player clicks Next together, ending with "I'm Ready To Rock!"
Single-player tour - 13-step guide to everything on screen that opens on launch until you tick "Don't show this again"; replay it from Help > Take the tour
Help screen lists all the new controls
Sound & Effects and Mixer adapt to panel size - knobs and strips shrink to fit a short panel and grow to fill a tall one
Beat Grid scrolls instead of squashing pad rows when the panel is short
Muted tracks are greyed out - this also applies to tracks silenced by another track's solo
MIDI riffs and chords start on their first note - empty lead-in bars are removed when added
MIDI loops come out at clean lengths of 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars
MIDI riffs dropped on an instrument track leave out their drum part instead of playing drum hits as wrong notes
The session carries on when the host leaves - another player takes over
Leaving asks Save & leave, Leave without saving or Stay
Joining a session saves your own song to your projects first
Live sessions use less CPU - the song is only checked for changes after an edit, not 5 times a second
Store listing now shows Studio Box as 1-4 player co-op
Tour and walkthrough cards sit right next to the feature they explain, with an arrow pointing at it
The mouse wheel over a knob scrolls the panel unless you rest on the knob first
Tracks added during a session no longer disappear
Joining a session no longer mixes your old tracks into the host's song
A sound you play across the keys is now sent to friends in a session and included in share files
Browser no longer overlaps its own icons when the editor panel is made tall
Long sound names no longer run into the length or BPM label in the browser
Mixer track names showed as "..." - they now display properly
Status bar velocity now matches the velocity box
Fixed a crash (IndexOutOfRangeException) in the delay effect
A missing sound file no longer floods the console with hundreds of warnings; the preview stops right away instead
Developer console commands no longer work in the published game, so other players can't rename your tracks or change your tempo
Fixed a leftover UI reference after leaving play mode
Removed an unused duplicate scene (mp.scene)
MIDI keyboards can't connect directly - s&box has no MIDI device support, so controller mode needs a key-mapper app (e.g. MidiKey2Key)
Controller mode plays every note at the on-screen velocity, and the controller's knobs and joystick don't do anything
MIDI import has only been tested with simple test files - files exported from other programs may split their parts differently
Join only lists sessions hosted by your Steam friends
Live sessions have only been tested on one PC so far, not between two players on different machines
Your saved kits and instruments stay on your PC - friends hear them in a session, but they aren't added to their own My Kits or My Instruments.
Update – Piano Roll Crash Fixed
I noticed some players were running into errors and did a deep dive to track down the cause.
It turned out that moving a selection of notes that was wider than the current loop would crash the piano roll (and sometimes the whole tool). This could happen when:
Selecting a group of notes that spanned more time than the loop
Having a single note longer than the loop
Shortening the loop after notes were already placed
Dragging notes while the loop was shorter than the selection
The fix now checks whether the selection actually fits inside the loop first. If it doesn’t, the notes simply won’t move instead of crashing.
There are no known issues remaining with this update applied. Thanks for the reports and keep the tunes coming!
