Cursed Log #3 - Shopping Carts, Bunkers & Better Map Generation

Another update is here! This time, I focused mainly on making runs feel more varied and giving players a few more ways to interact with the world.

Shopping carts are now available during runs!

You can use them to carry several items at once instead of bringing everything back one by one. Their capacity is limited, so you'll still have to decide what is actually worth taking with you.

I spent some time making them feel like actual physical objects rather than just moving containers:

  • Rotating wheels

  • Impact sounds

  • Improved collisions

  • Hand movement while pushing

  • Ragdoll impacts when hitting players

  • Support for cursed item phenomena while items are inside the cart

And yes, there is now a Cart Convoy theme. Because apparently pushing a line of shopping carts through a cursed forest needed its own music.

A completely new Bunker zone has been added to the map.

It introduces a more enclosed environment compared to the forest and other open areas, with tighter corridors and rooms to explore.

The bunker also gives me a new type of environment to expand in future updates with more rooms, encounters, loot and phenomena.

Be careful when entering. Running away is a little harder when there's only one corridor behind you.

The way maps are generated has been reworked.

Previously, runs could start feeling a little too predictable once you understood how the different zones were arranged.

The generation system now allows for much more variation in how areas are placed and connected, making each expedition less predictable.

The goal is for players to actually explore and orient themselves again instead of quickly learning the usual layout.

This also makes it much easier for me to add new zones like the Bunker without every map following the same structure.

A bunch of smaller improvements and fixes were also added during the update:

  • Improved map visuals

  • Mobs no longer target players sitting in seats

  • Improved shopping cart spawning and collisions

  • Added breaking effects to vents

  • Improved tutorial completion flow

  • The tutorial van won't leave while empty

  • Improved item spawning performance

  • Fixed some meshes not rendering for clients

  • Fixed the run loading animation for clients

  • Increased the base value of cursed Quest Items

More zones, phenomena and other content are planned now that the map generation system is more flexible.

See you in the next run.
