Update 1.4: Rudy's Lot & the Orchard

The first dig moves to Rudy's lot, rebuilt with warm evening light and real shadows. After you find Biscuit, an old map leads to a second dig site: the Orchard, 55 new layers deep. Plus a Stats page, a wide view of the town and a new layer meter.

Update 1.4 gives Dig the Dog a new look and a second place to dig. The first dig now happens on Rudy's lot, rebuilt from scratch with warm evening light. And once you find Biscuit, the dig doesn't end there: his treasure holds a torn piece of an old map, and it points to the Orchard.

  • Rudy's lot: a new first dig site with Rudy's house, the street and the town around it
  • New light: evening sun and shadows on the ground, the pit walls and the blocks
  • The Orchard: a second dig site, 55 layers deep, with roots, mossy rock and gold
  • Old Bones' map: pick your next dig on the map on Rudy's table
  • Stats page, Climb up and a new layer meter

Your save carries over. If you already found Biscuit, Rudy shows you the map when you continue, and you go to the Orchard.
The backyard is gone. The first dig now happens on Rudy's lot in town, with his house, the street and the neighbours around it. Every model around the pit was placed and lit in Blender, then baked into the game, so the sun throws long shadows across the grass and down into the pit.

The blocks you dig are lit by the same sun. Blocks shade the ones around them, the pit walls show the rock layers you are digging through, and your rigs cast soft shadows as they walk.

The Orchard is the second dig site: an old apple orchard at the edge of town, with a farmhouse, a fruit stand and fields around it. Under it are 55 layers of its own rock.
  • New blocks: meadow grass, dark soil, mossy rock, stone and granite
  • Roots: they run down through several layers. Break the top of a root and the one below it has half its health left
  • Ores: iron near the top, gold deeper down, and rare crystals near the bottom
  • Story: Uncle Rudy has new things to say on the radio as you dig, and there is something waiting at the bottom
Your upgrades, rigs and skills come with you. The Orchard is tougher than the first dig, and it pays more.
Old Bones was Grandpa Walt's dog, and he could smell treasure through a mile of rock. His map was torn into pieces and buried. The first piece is in Biscuit's treasure, and every new site has another one at the bottom.

The map lies on Rudy's table next to the pit. Press Climb up and click it, or press Keep digging after a dig, and the camera flies down to it. Hover a site to see how deep it is and your best time there, and click it to start digging. You can go back to a site you already cleared to beat your time.

  • Stats page: the game menu (Esc) has a new Stats page with your play time, digs finished, blocks mined, clicks, money earned and spent, crits, chests and each site's best time
  • Climb up: a button in the sidebar lifts the camera for a wide view of the town while your rigs keep digging
  • Layer meter: the meter in the corner shows the site's rock layers as blocks, and where you are in them
The Orchard is the first of ten new dig sites. Here is the plan. It may change as we go, and your feedback shapes it.
  • Next: new sounds. New sounds for digging dirt and stone and for the rigs
  • Around Town (the rest of act 1): the Junkyard, where scrap heaps pay a little every time you hit them, and the Old Quarry, where TNT crates blast the blocks around them. Also a collection book of things to find on each site, and new skills for the new sites
  • Out of Town (act 2): sell the lots for Golden Bones and spend them in a new Kennel skill tree. Then dig the Beach (the tide fills your holes with wet sand), the Snowfield (ice that shatters) and the Old Woods (mushrooms that spread)
  • Underground (act 3): Hot Springs, the Old Mineshaft, Crystal Hollow and the Crater. Plus leaderboards for the fastest clear of each site, and a daily dig that is the same for everyone
Thanks for playing, and for all the feedback so far.
Tell me what you think of the Orchard and the new look in the comments!
