Update 1.5: The Junkyard & the Old Quarry

Two new dig sites finish the first part of Old Bones' map: the Junkyard, where scrap pays on every hit and crushed cars need your pickaxe, and the Old Quarry, where TNT crates blast the blocks around them. Plus 20 new skills, more upgrade levels and smoother play late in a dig.

Update 1.5 adds the last two dig sites of the first map. Clear the Orchard and the Junkyard opens; clear the Junkyard and the Old Quarry opens. Each one has new blocks that work in a new way, and its own row of skills.
  • The Junkyard: 50 layers of brick and buried cars. Scrap pays every time you hit it, and crushed cars only break to your pickaxe
  • The Old Quarry: 60 layers of limestone, silver and coal, with TNT crates that blast every block around them
  • 20 new skills and up to 34 more levels on five upgrades
  • New upgrade icons, clearer damage numbers and less lag late in a dig
Your save carries over. If you already cleared the Orchard, the Junkyard is open on the map on Rudy's table.

Rudy bought the junkyard on Route 9 (the owner threw in three cars and a goat). Around the pit are rows of wrecks, an auto repair shop, a crane with a magnet and stacks of tires. Under it are 50 layers of dirt, old brick walls and grey gravel.
  • Scrap: scrap blocks pay a little every time you hit them, not only when they break
  • Crushed cars: only your pickaxe breaks them. Rigs and Biscuit leave them to you, so the dig never finishes on its own
  • Story: new radio lines from Rudy, and something of his at the bottom

The old stone quarry up the hill, where Grandpa Walt worked with Old Bones. Benches of cut stone step up around the pit, with a rail track, a derrick, a stone crusher and a flooded corner. Under it are 60 layers of limestone slabs, stone, silver, coal and dark basalt.
  • TNT crates: break one and it blasts every block around it for most of its health. Crates in reach go off too, so one swing can set off a chain
  • Careful rigs: rigs and Biscuit keep away from the crates until you learn Demolition Crew
  • New ores: silver from layer 15 and coal from layer 30
The skill tree has two new rows. The Junkyard row opens when you clear the Orchard, the Old Quarry row when you clear the Junkyard.

  • Junkyard: Shockwave IV, Car Crusher (triple damage to crushed cars), Power Drill, Heavy Bits, Turbo Fans, Scrap Magnet, Scrap Dealer, Salvage, Safe Cracker and Fetch
  • Old Quarry: Blasting Caps (TNT reaches two blocks out), Rock Splitter, Hammer Drill, Tungsten Bits, Steam Engine, Demolition Crew, Silver Lining, Blast Pay, Strongbox (a chest on every layer) and Dig Dog
  • More upgrade levels: Crit Chance, Crit Damage, Splash Damage, Hand Drill and Rig Cooling go up to level 50 and more
  •  Upgrade icons: the upgrade and tab icons are new 3D models in the same style as the rigs
  • Damage numbers: each block shows one number that adds up as you and your rigs hit it, instead of a pile of numbers
  • Less lag: deep in a dig with seven rigs the game makes far fewer objects and the interface costs half as much, so it stays smooth
  • Camera: it no longer swings past the next layer after a slow frame
The Old Quarry holds the last piece of Old Bones' first map. Put all four pieces together and the map points out of town.
That is the whole of act 1, Around Town.

Here is the plan that I had for act 2.
  • Out of Town (act 2): sell the lots for Golden Bones and spend them in a new Kennel skill tree. Then dig the Beach (the tide fills your holes with wet sand), the Snowfield (ice that shatters) and the Old Woods (mushrooms that spread)
  • Underground (act 3): Hot Springs, the Old Mineshaft, Crystal Hollow and the Crater.
Plus leaderboards for the fastest clear of each site, and a daily dig that is the same for everyone

Thanks for playing, and for the feedback on the Orchard. Tell us what you think of the Junkyard and the Old Quarry in the comments!
Dig the Dog was removed from the Play Fund, and my application to get it back was turned down. That took a lot of my motivation away, so 1.5 is the last big update. I'll still fix bugs and adjust the balance if something comes up. Thank you to everyone who played, sent feedback and dug all the way down to Biscuit.

If you enjoyed Dig the Dog, my new game is out now: Bankroll: Rags to Riches, a 3D money swiper where you flick cash, buy businesses and build your credit to climb from a box in the alley to the Vault.

Dig sites
  • The Junkyard - a third dig site: 50 layers under Rudy's junkyard, with brick, grey gravel, scrap and crushed cars

  • Scrap - scrap blocks pay a little every time you hit them, not only when they break

  • Crushed cars - only the pickaxe breaks them; rigs and Biscuit leave them to you

  • The Old Quarry - a fourth dig site: 60 layers of limestone, dark basalt, silver and coal under an old stone quarry

  • TNT crates - break one and it blasts every block around it, and sets off other crates nearby; rigs keep away from them

  • Story - Uncle Rudy has new radio lines for both sites, and each one has something at the bottom

  • Old Bones' map - the last two pieces of the first map

Skills
  • Junkyard row - 10 new skills, open once you clear the Orchard: Shockwave IV, Car Crusher, Power Drill, Heavy Bits, Turbo Fans, Scrap Magnet, Scrap Dealer, Salvage, Safe Cracker and Fetch

  • Old Quarry row - 10 new skills, open once you clear the Junkyard: Blasting Caps, Rock Splitter, Hammer Drill, Tungsten Bits, Steam Engine, Demolition Crew, Silver Lining, Blast Pay, Strongbox and Dig Dog

Upgrades

Interface
  • Upgrade icons - the upgrade and tab icons are new 3D models in the rigs' style

  • Upgrade rows - prices never wrap, and the level sits at the end of the values line so long names fit

  • Damage numbers - one number per block that adds up as you and your rigs hit it, instead of a stack of numbers

  • Skill tree - the branch and row names are easier to read

Performance
  • Late game - much less lag deep in a dig with many rigs: fewer objects made while digging and a cheaper interface

  • Camera - the camera no longer swings past the next layer and back after a slow frame
