State of Alpha 3 (and Official Stance)

It has been 18 days since the last of alpha update. DXRP has been doing well and is steadily maintaining its popularity.

Lobbies are NO MORE, we've moved to official dedicated servers hosted on Hetzner (Nuremberg, Germany). With this change we've seen a major improvement to the network stability and network problems almost non-existent.

Moderation is still tricky but we're actively trying to improve it and make DXRP a pleasant experience.

Over the past few days we've doubled the staffing (for servers) and now have more developers on board to speed up development.

The future shines with promise, though the path to reach it winds through fog. It's not the clarity of the journey that matters, but the conviction to keep moving forward.

DXRP aims to protect an environment with respect, civility, and safety for all members.

Our commitment to the community, we have a zero-tolerance policy on any form of discrimination or harassment on the part of our game.

Zero Tolerance

DXRP has a zero-tolerance policy on:
  • Racism
  • Sexism
  • Homophobia
  • Transphobia
  • Religious discrimination
  • Ableism
  • Age discrimination
  • Any other form of discrimination or prejudice

Policy Application

Any behaviour a user is found to engage in discrimination the following applies:

  • First offence may lead to a suspensions depending on severity
  • Repeated or severe behaviour will lead to a permanent ban from DXRP

Reporting

We encourage all users to report any actions and acts of discrimination to the core team via the proper avenues. All discrimination reports will be fully investigated by our moderation team.
Given the above policy, for the past month or so we've been quite forgiving on punishing people since we're still in alpha and the player base wasn't that big.

With the recent complaints and after reviewing our directive. Punishments will be much harsher than they previously were (mostly for non-RP stuff).

Warnings are now only applicable to RP-related offenses, bans will be issued for violations for any form of discrimination or prejudice in-game or in the discord.

Generally across the board, things will be more focused and additional tooling will be rolled out over the coming weeks to empower stricter (and automated) moderation.
We've noticed some curious minds exploring DXRP and potential exploits lately. We want to clarify our thoughts on this activity.

At a fundamental level, we discourage exploitation of game mechanics. However, we recognize that both s&box and DXRP are in alpha stages of development, which creates a unique situation.

Our official policy:
  • If you discover exploits and share details with our team to help us improve, we're willing to work with you constructively
  • Please conduct any experimental activities in low-population servers rather than disrupting the main gameplay experience
  • Malicious hacking with intent to harm the community experience will result in permanent bans
While we understand that s&box being free means alternative accounts are easily created, we'd prefer to foster a symbiotic relationship with security-minded players. Your insights can genuinely help improve DXRP if shared responsibly.

We welcome hobbyist hackers who approach this with a constructive mindset - helping us identify vulnerabilities benefits everyone in the long run.
Our most recent addition to the weapons, is a sniper rifle! Still fine tuning but it will complement the rest of the guns nicely.
We've added a fun little dice entity which is completely random 1-6 to let players create their own games.

This was more of a fun task for a few of our less-experienced developer / modeler to make but I think it will tide us over till there's more gambling-like mechanics.

We're currently going through the most useful tools in GMOD which are most beneficial for DXRP. One of those is the stacker which lets you duplicate props perfectly aligned.

People have already made some wild stuff with it:
In preparation for the new three thieves map, I've split out the existing map into its own repository and in-dependently published. Alongside allowing DXRP to launch specific maps on startup (with doors/windows).

If anyone wants to give it some love, I'll happily accept PRs but it will be slowly phased out.
The new map is coming along swimmingly, it's nearly completion of the initial chunk. Which means we will be able to start testing and ironing out issues on the DXRP-side very soon.

If you want to try it out, you can find it at: https://sbox.game/thieves/rpdowntown3t/
Please put in feedback in our discord #feedback (discord in forenote)

Here are some screenshots of the current state:
Once the new map has been verified internally and everything for DXRP is placed and configured (jails, spawns, out of bounds, doors, windows).

We plan on running both maps concurrently (on different servers). During this period, we will gather feedback, adapt and slowly phase out the old map.

Our team has been sketching up building pieces that players might want to use.

We've recreated the basic building props for Garry's Mod, and already added the first set of basic building props, with more coming soon.

Currently, still cleaning up UVs, mostly on edges.

These will be coming out shortly and then iterated on
Some nerd talk
I've been sketching up building pieces players might want to use, I worked on creating pieces using custom trimsheets, but decided to scrap the idea in favor of a tiling material in respect to the material tool. I'm excited to see what the community requests for building in the future, hopefully I'll get to make a trim sheet or two it after all. I used blender to recreate the building props for gmod, I just unwrap them and move the faces to line up with the default "plate metal" texture i've made. It tends to translate with any tiling texture pretty well. I've added the first set of basic building props, with more coming. I'm still cleaning up UVs, mostly on edges, after that it's just a matter of creating the vmdl for each piece. I'd also like to finish up the default plate texture as it needs a bit more work.
Just wanted to briefly explain how the dedicated servers will operate.

There will be official servers and unofficial (coming later), official servers will mimic 2014 darkrp, and will all share a global warning/kick/economy system.

Unofficial servers will be doing their own thing with their own rules (roleplay), economy, and staffing.

There are currently two dedicated servers:
DXRP Official 1 - The most powerful one with 2 dedicated CPUs and 8gb ram
DXRP Official 2 - A failsafe/rollover server with 3 shared CPUs and 4gb ram.

Both are in the cloud and easily scalable. I will add more as there are demand, currently we have a about ~25 players on average on either one.

Currently we have to do daily restarts which happen around ~ 6AM EST which is when I usually do updates aswell.

1,018 commits
310 daily active players
$20,721,675 total in-game balance
5036 total unique players
404 sanctions
24 bans (and more coming soon)
2 hackers
376,327 audited events (buying, salary, selling etc)

In-game, if you use the camera and press MMB, it will publish to our discord and I cherry pick the best ones for these updates.
Some players have put together a fake radio station for DXRP (AI generated)
Still underway, mayors now have the ability to remove laws. The next piece will be a wanted system which I had to do the UI changes for.

Been preoccupied with fixing stuff than new features but it's still on the agenda!

The law stuff has been rolled out, now it's just warrants, wanted and lockdowns remaining.

DXRP now supports third person which should help FiveM players adjust and also let players who prefer it, use it.

You can toggle it with C in-game.

It works with everything I believe, let us know in the discord if it doesn't.

I've been looking into sitting. It's a bit complicated with exploits but it will be something that will be added.
Just for fun we've added a ladder that is pretty buggy.  It will probably be removed in the future because it's kinda goofy.

Just don't turn it upside down.
Models for the upcoming drug dealer job have been finished, it will start with weed and then more complex ones later.

Development of the feature will commence after governance is done.
Current development priority list (Features):
  1. Governance (Warrants, Wanted, Lockdown)
  2. New Map (Needs an elevator, windows placed, doors placed and performance tweaking)
  3. Drugs (Weed)
  4. Cooking (Cooking station, ingredients, food)
As for the community:
  1. Stricter punishments and firmer grasp against bad behavior
  2. Make rules more explicit, tidy up discord and make it so players read the rules when they join (and must agree)
  3. Better way to report other players and automated filtering

Alongside fixing, refining and managing the current playerbase.

tbh, not liking the stance on the removal of lobbies and only allowing official servers. kinda goes against the og rp modes.
