Is "Rust 2" going to be an official s&box game, or is it up to the community?
Hey everyone,
With how amazing the s&box toolset is right now (especially the C# API), I've been thinking back to the Unity runtime fee drama in 2023. Garry explicitly stated back then that if they made a Rust sequel, it definitely wouldn't be on Unity.
Given that Facepunch has essentially molded Source 2 to speak Unity's language for s&box, it feels like the perfect foundation is already here. Valve's sub-tick networking and the Rubikon physics engine would instantly solve Rust's notorious garbage collection stutters and "projectile invalid" issues.
My question for the devs and the community: Is Facepunch quietly planning to build an official Rust successor inside Source 2? Or is the expectation that the community is going to use the s&box open-source tools to build the ultimate Rust clone ourselves?
I'm highly tempted to import some Rust assets to build a quick survival proof-of-concept, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel if Facepunch is already secretly working on it. What do you guys think?
