I get maps and mods, but entire games? Why?

I don't like how it doesn't merge favorites/likes/reviews from asset.party and Steam Workshop. Now my game is back to square one (0 likes, 0 favorites when clicking on the game in S&box itself), which makes me feel very iffy about discoverability :/

Bummer I kind of liked the layout of asset.party. Hopefully it's flexible enough for all the different types of content in s&box

I think this is a mistake to go this route for games. downloading them is better and it keeps them updates yes, but I believe that having access to asset party and uploading them that way was superior. I think this leans a bit too much into the gmod side, and if you guys really are going for an improved "gmod 2" experience, then mods and addons should be on the workshop for the sandbox mode, but games should stay on asset party.

I don't really see any discourse being that games are not on workshop, I believe that people coming in from gmod would not care about that, they would care if mods and addons were, but i think entire games should remain as they are.

there has to be a middle ground here, and believe this leans to much into the already existent.

I don't know, but the general discourse I've seen has been player models, mounts, and lack of a solid sandbox mode. games themselves, their only real discourse has been not wanting to see slop.

They also did not enjoy micro transactions, but i believe that can be alleviated by having all the other concerns heavily addressed.

I could be wrong though, but this is my opinion idk i guess you can cancel me for it i guess idkk.....

The worst possible decision ever taken by Facepunch, I mean I'm okay with maps and addons on the steam workshop but not games, this is just crap, now we (devs) have to reupload the WHOLE entire game to the steamworkshop everytime we make an update, instead of just sending the new files. On top of that dedup isn't supported, which means we will redownload the same assets multiple times for different games.

Nope there is not a single positive things about this decision, apart to please to the GMOD fanboys who still don't understand that S&box workshop is just infinitely better in every SINGLE way possible.

I pray for this change to be reverted.

I understand the change if the players actually pushed for this, but I don't think they really did?

I am speaking for myself, but all I wanted was a way to pre-load shit (aka subscribe to an addon/mod/map/game whatever you want to call it) and then just play the game without waiting for shit to constantly download (you can also play offline if for some reason your internet decides to fuck off).

And I believe this is what the people complaining about the current way games and Sandbox addons worked have a problem with. It was not necessary to move to the Steam Workshop, just have the same system for game addons like it is in other games that utilize the Steam Workshop, but use the current cloud.

is the vision for the new ideal future to have the player subscribe to addons to be able to access the majority of the platform's content (games, maps, and etc), or is the ideal future for the platform to be functionally the same as it's been since launch, but now using the steam workshop as a backend instead of an in-house one?

if it's the former (i.e. being more like gmod) then i gotta ask, what's the point? like genuinely what would the point be aside from appealing to nostalgia? because other than that, it seems like a huge step backwards to the platform

the entire appeal of this since launch has been the ability to play games with one click, or spawn stuff in with one click, but without that it's just a worse gmod on the sandbox end since it has less stuff and is arguably less polished AND NOW is more dated since i have to mod stuff in instead of just loading it in, and a worse "discovery page" on the platform end since there's more of a barrier between the player and the game, which makes me really wonder what makes the steam workshop so good that the game had to switch directions entirely and arguably go backwards instead of just improving the in-house tools. Like at that point, why would i try to convince my friends to play the sandbox mode in this instead of gmod? or why would i say "hey i know you played almost this exact thing on roblox, but you should download s&box and then MOD IN a very similar game instead of just opening roblox and clicking on the game"? because at least before it had the draw of being a modernized gmod instead of just a modern gmod

i'm kinda disappointed by the potential new direction, i paid for s&box, not gmod 2

& EVEN IF the goal is to go towards the ladder direction out of the two i described, and i just wasted time with the last paragraph, then that needs to be made way more clear, because a large group of people think the opposite

TL;DR most of the fair first impressions had the criticism that the platform was unfinished, not that that it wasn't like gmod (*in terms of the workshop stuff), NO ONE who genuinely met the idea where it was at had the takeaway of "oh i wish i had to download stuff from the steam workshop instead", so PLEASE stop appealing to the old chuds who just whine about change, and try to look for the actual critiques

like i said, i paid for s&box, not gmod 2, so STOP LISTENING TO THE PEOPLE WHO JUST WANT IT TO BE GMOD 2, you made it clear from the start that s&box wasn't that, so please don't betray the people who bought s&box for s&box, because that's what this new update looks to do

I'm kinda lost cuz you literally can see every gamemodes that you just click in and download the content when you join a server on the server browser on Gmod so what is the need to replace the old flow of discovering games when it's essentially just the same thing as that but with an algorithm pushing different games.

The offline and up to date thing seems nice but you can just essentially build that into the same system with like a favourite button which can also be used for filtering menus

Step 1 - shadowban all slop games like idles or clickers
Step 2 - move to another system so devs will upload only "good games" from now on

Ah yes, it is a precise master plan i see

Why not integrate both? People who want to play and don't care with development they can use steam workshop, while people who want to build a game in s&box they can use asset.party like unity asset store. Using only steam workshop seems backward to me...

Please keep asset.party while also allowing for games to be downloaded from workshop

Lets be honest:

The current system with games, reviews, and ratings has been completely corrupted by *some* members within the community. Enough so to hurt the platform as a whole.

Go ahead and thumb through some two-star games and compare them to Four Star games. It's not accurate. They don't actually reflect such differences in gameplay. It's not Merit based. It's a popularity contest where people with duplicate accounts or friends in the community get flooded with positives While others can make a good, polished gameplay experience and get shafted.

Face punch put its trust in good faith toward the community, and they and other well-meaning members got the shaft.

And those who participate in this know who they are. Take some accountability. The play fund completely corrupted huge portions of people to the point of bashing and down voting completely playable experiences, all because they thought they could earn a nickel. Weak characters corrupt the system.

P.S. - I am glad they are revitalizing the Garry's Mod clone, but unfortunately you'll see thay you'll never be able to please some people.

Trust your instincts, FacePunch. Success is never a straight line. I have faith that you'll figure this all out, and you'll have my support.

A lot of the hate filled reviews came from people who misunderstood the meaning of the word "Spiritual Successor". Go check out games from the Dreams platform on PS4. It's filled with what those haters within this community would call AI slop, except there was no AI for the whole thing. This AI Witch Hunt is a social narrative and construct based out of fear and negativity. AI is a tool which some use as an excuse to release their own inner-demons. I have no problem with categorizing games that use AI assets, but they certainly don't deserve half of the hate that they've generated when used by solo or new Developers as they continue to build and refine their skillsets. Or some of the users just want to direct their own game experience solo. Haters need to chill. Maybe somebody wants to create a card battling game but they can't draw like the artists at blizzard. Should they not be allowed to make a game without getting dumped on?

I don't use AI models animations or anything else that can be avoided. But I don't hate that those that do, or use free asset packs, because I'm not a hater. The platform attracts people who never made a game before. Let them grow without all the hate. Thats *my* ideal for fostering a better platform.

i absolutely agree with that, it would be cool if some games could have workshop compatablity "mainly sandbox mode" but having the entire games be in workshop just doesn't feel right
i think this is the wrong decision. people are wanting steam workshop for mods/sandbox mode not the entire game

I kind of think the rating system was premature... I still kind of think of s&box as a sort of, kind of... incubator/accelerator for aspiring game devs (or game dev  adjacent) who want to do "shit" "professionally", but that is just me
