Pick your role: four jobs and a build server on fire

Play as the Programmer, the Artist, QA or the Designer, each with their own kit and an ability on V, and keep the build alive through mid-wave events: a build server under siege, a hotfix to deliver, a critical bug and a merge request.

Until now everyone played the same playtester. Now you pick a job on the title screen, and waves don't always end with "kill everything" anymore: something goes wrong partway through, and you have to deal with it while the horde keeps coming.

🧑‍💻 Four roles

Each role has its own starting kit, a passive, and an ability on V.
  • Programmer: the game as you know it, with the build's weapon. V: Ship it, six seconds of faster fire and faster feet.
  • Artist: the Airbrush, a new gun that paints the floor. Enemies hate wet paint: it slows them down, and your hits on anything standing in it do 30% more. V: Paint bucket, a big pool of paint that burns.
  • QA: starts with the Placeholder Pistol at v2. Every hit files a bug report: reported enemies take 20% more damage from everyone and drop an extra key. V: Regression test, which reports everything nearby and freezes it for a moment.
  • Designer: sees four commits on every offer instead of three. V: Cut feature, once a wave, removes the worst patch note from the build. It was never in scope.

🪜 Unlocked through your career

The Programmer is there from your first run. The Artist unlocks at Junior Dev (rank 2), QA at Developer (rank 3) and the Designer at Senior Dev (rank 4). If you've played before, your career already counts, so you might have all four waiting for you.

🔥 Mid-wave events

From wave 3, most waves have something go wrong partway through, and the wave doesn't end until it's dealt with.
  • Build server under load: part of the horde goes for the server rack instead of you. Stand next to it to repair it. Keep it alive for 25 seconds and you get a free commit; lose it and ERRORs ship.
  • Hotfix needed: someone has to walk the hotfix floppy to the deploy terminal, and the horde goes after whoever is carrying it. Deliver it and the wave's bad patch notes get rolled back and everyone heals. Miss the window and a regression ships.
  • Critical bug: a fast golden bug makes a run for it. Squash it in 18 seconds for a bounty of keys. Let it get away and it multiplies.
  • Merge request: stand in the review zone until it's approved. Enemies inside are merge conflicts and hold the review up. Approved means +1 weapon level for everyone standing in it.

📅 Daily build

The daily build has a role of the day now, the same for everyone, so the daily board stays fair. The title screen says which one.

🤝 Co-op

Each player brings their own role. Two players in the review zone get a merge approved faster, and if the hotfix carrier goes down, the partner can pick the floppy up. You both need this update to play together.

➕ Also

  • Controls: V uses your role's ability, and 4 picks the Designer's fourth commit.
  • Game over: the screen shows how many events you won, and which role you played.
