You can now actually do things with the people in your life. There are over 20 activities to pick from, whether you're hanging out with a friend or taking someone on a date.
Each one nudges the platonic or romance level between you, depending on who you're with and what you're doing.
The reworked NPC cards on the Relationships tab show both levels at a glance, so you can see how things are tracking with everyone in your life without digging into individual profiles.
You can now actively look for a partner instead of waiting for the game to throw one at you.
Romance level is its own thing, tracked separately from your platonic relationship, so you can be best mates with someone without anything romantic going on, or fancy someone you barely know.
Sexuality is in too, though it's auto-assigned for this release, and I'll be opening that up to player control in a future update.
There's a Try For A Baby action, and contraception that works per sexual partner, so you can be careful with your partner and reckless with your sidepiece, if that's the life you're choosing to live.
Speaking of which, there's now an out-of-wedlock pregnancy reputation penalty that scales based on the year, so a child born in 1962 out of marriage lands very differently from one born in 2014.
Once your kids arrive, you've got interactions to build a relationship with them, and if you're feeling cheeky as an adult character yourself, you can ask a parent for money.
A very early design of the family tree, but it's functional!
Alongside that, your wider family actually lives their own lives in the background. NPCs marry, have kids, take jobs, retire, and have small life events of their own, so the world keeps moving whether you're paying attention or not.
The new Traditional/Progressive trait pair feeds into how characters handle a lot of this.
On the Relationships page, you can now toggle whether deceased relatives show up, and clicking a deceased NPC opens their obituary, with date of death and age now on their profile.
The Survived by section of the obituary has been expanded too; it now lists grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and further descendants down the line.
