Playfund income tax return ?!

Hey, this is a question directly to Facepunch, bcs it's more of a legal question regarding the playfund money, I was wondering what status we're considered when we receive money from the playfund ?

Do we need to declare the money (even for small amount) ? Are we considered freelance as soon as we receive playfund money ? Or is it considered like "donations" ? Because technically I do not sell anything, I just get paid by Facepunch but I'm not part of Facepunch, so it's quite unclear !

I live in Europe (France) and I was wondering if I'm suppose to declare me as a freelance or not, is there a minimum amount of income needed for that ?

Because it's quite unclear right now, the playfund doesn't really specify that, I wanted to ask here first bcs it's not really a usual situation imo.

Just don't report any income to any government, and don't pay your taxes.

The responsibility for paying taxes lies with the person who received the money, because laws are very different in countries. It's a very delicate legal issue. In some countries, you can't receive money directly, but you can through another person; in some countries, there are three types of tax, but you can todo some, it so that you pay only one.

I'll give you some good and bad advice at the same time. If the tax authorities don't see your $500, then maybe they won't see it in the future? I'm not encouraging anything, just giving advice. It's up to you to decide.

Yep I know that the responsabiliy is ofc on my side, the thing that I don't really understand is that what this money is considered "legally speaking", is it donation ? is it a paycheck ? Bcs I mean, I don't directly work for facepunch but still receving money from them, playfund kinda work like if someone was giving me "donation money" which is really different from paycheck money legally speaking I think.

You know what I mean, the money we get from playfund is kinda in a "gray zone" right now imo. (Or at least this is currently unclear to me)

But yeah I'm pretty sure it really depends from a country to an other, I will discuss that with my bank at some point anyway, I just wanted to gather some infos here before hand.

it depends on your country and tax laws. Just like in the US  you could write off things for a business that realistically aren't really business expenses. You will just have to do the research or talk to an accountant to see how you want to file it.

That’s a really good question, and you’re right — it’s a bit unclear. As far as I understand, the Playfund isn’t considered “donations.” It’s a form of payment or revenue share from Facepunch for your game’s engagement or performance, so it usually counts as taxable income.

In France (and most of Europe), you’re supposed to declare it as self-employment income — meaning you’d need to register as a freelancer (micro-entrepreneur) if you want to receive it legally and declare it properly, even for small amounts. There isn’t really a “free” threshold where you can just ignore it; technically, all income is declarable.

 That said, since this involves specific tax and legal classification, it’s best to double-check directly with your local tax office to confirm the exact status. 

Really varies from country to country.
In my case (Italy) I'm putting it on the "Other Incomes" section of my form 730.
After a certain point you'd want to set up a sole proprietorship, which still has an €80k yearly income limit in Italy, but has some amazing tax rates for new businesses if you're already employed full time somewhere else, so you end up paying only 5%.
I'm not sure what France looks like though, I know some countries like the UK have amazing sole proprietorship advantages and limits so you definitely want to meet up with an accountant for it.
