can you clarify that you are going to add DLSS and FSR. you say you dont want to add TSR as it effects image quality which i understand but modern ai upscalers are essential in delivering a good experience for players at high resolutions, especially 4k. While these upscalers can be art dependent, in deadlock, another source 2 title, you would be very hard pressed to tell the difference between having DLSS on 2x at 4k (performance mode, traditionally), vs native.

I fear people think S&box is a standalone game, when in reality it acts more like a Hub for many games to be accessed through.
I for one am very much enjoying S&box and if i knew where, i'd love to have the ability to directly report bugs and give my thoughts as i watch and participate in S&box's growth

My thoughts as well regarding the AI stuff, and that's the reality I cannot deny. I just hope the majority will eventually understand that it's not AI that's bad, but people that use it for said bad results.
Congratulations once again to everyone at Facepunch and to everyone who’s been waiting for this moment on the release. Yesterday was an awesome day. I like everything about it, despite the issues and I’m confident that the next 10 years (just like the ones I spent on Garry’s Mod) will be incredibly strong for game development, since s&box is ushering in a new era: a platform and engine all in one (Epic is preparing to buy Unity and turn it into a platform for Fortnite as well, it's hard proof my words) Yeah, back in 2023, I didn’t believe FP could pull off developing an engine and a platform either, and I thought: why are you doing this? gmod 2 is almost ready just release it. And as it turned out, they did it. And I’m sure that in three years, when S&Box becomes free, it’ll be even better, and in 10 years, when there are tons of new possibilities. So, thank you to Garry and the whole team for giving us the chance to realize our creative ambitions, bring joy to players, and make money for that. Regarding the thoughts on AI Slop, I’m really glad that Facepunch is responding to this so well, without bias, and with the understanding that AI is just a tool that can produce both great and bad results. It can solve the design problem for programmers and the programming problem for designers.  🔥 I’m looking forward to gamejam date, and I’m making a game together with the whole community! Good luck to everyone.

I love how you render full frames, such that there is no blur or ghosting, real props for that, however in certain games where performance is getting worse, I wouldn't mind turning on upscaling to aid with more FPS. The option should be there. If I am playing a demanding FPS, I don't mind sacrificing some quality for better responsiveness and performance.

matt can I just say your section about performance shortcuts is absolutely awesome, and it's really encouraging to see real developers that have opinions against lazy temporal solutions in computer graphics. Damn I hate TAA and accumulation of any kind. I always notice how ridiculously sharp/crisp the graphics are in s&box; it's so freakin' important. Seeing the modern graphics techniques you guys are implementing in s&box is one of the things I look forward to most in your blog posts so keep it coming!

Thanks for not giving up on the game, there is a lot of opportunity here, as long as the game is improved and worked on and the feedback is heard.
I'd say most important thing is to not let heavily disliked games onto front-page of discovery. Still findable on list, but this would help with keeping any low-quality stuff out and high-quality in.

Yeah this is probably the one place we'll break the temporal rules. A lot of people complaining about bad performance are trying to run the game on a 3060 with a 4k screen where they would obviously use an upscaler in any other game.

AI Slop:

Hell no. AI is not only the teacher. AI can be that tool, that generates code. People blaming AI Slop not because it's AI. It's because of the people that generates ton of bad content with it. Cheap and faster will never have good quality

Performance:

Have you seen 1% or 0.1% fps? My 5080 can't handle explosions in prop hunt!! Even when I have 150 fps in steam overlay. Average is not an indicator for performance

It can be cracked very easily, people are sharing builds with working multiplayer, the $20 barrier to entry does not exist, at most you'd need to buy the game once to publish something, then bot the shit out of it using cracked copies.

Regarding the slop, Garry (and the rest of the devs I guess) seem to think there's a reality where someone puts in ALLLLL the proper work, making a real proper game, adding all the bells and whistles, making it look good and everything, only to AI generate a thumbnail at the final hour, wasting all the effort they put into their great game.

So let me say, this is not possible.

Let me repeat

THERE IS NO REALITY WHERE SOMEONE MAKES A GENUINELY GOOD GAME, ONLY TO GENERATE A THUMBNAIL AT THE LAST SECOND. IF THAT DOES HAPPEN, THEY NEVER CARED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Most modern engines spread rendering work across multiple frames. Temporal upscaling, temporal AA, amortized GI - it's fast but it all adds up to a blurry, ghosty mess that falls apart the moment you move.

We're not doing that. We render one frame every frame.

I'm very happy with this approach, I wanted to make a game with realistic or semi-realistic graphics and because of that I decided to use Unreal Engine, and it all ended with me spending 4 days to understand how different types of anti-aliasing work and how to get rid of the "blurry/ghosty" effect but at the same time reduce the "staircase" effect, and in the end I was not satisfied with the result at all in UE, so I continued searching for a game engine that would suit me and then I found s&box, which in my subjective opinion completely solves my problem and is primarily designed for 3D, thank you for having your own personal opinion and for not blindly following trends.👍

AI is the teacher now. It's how people are going to learn how to program from now on. They're going to be generating their own examples and have it explain the code to them.
Garry, sorry to say, but you are wrong.
You'd think that is the case (because you know how to program already), but the truth is that anyone below average abuses it to get through rather than benefit from AI.

 I have seen graduates who can't write a SLOC in Python because they cheated all the way through CompSci UG with AI. I was forced to work with them.
"Working" with such "people" is a chore that I wouldn't wish upon anyone.
They're essentially credit stealers on steroids, what AI unfortunately is.

The problem is that AI/LLMs aren't a good knowledge extraction tool. Actually, the opposite, you NEED to correct it like a babysitter tries to instill any added value to a newborn. It will give you ideas that are outright crap, and if and ONLY if you are smart enough to notice whenever it is bullshitting you, you will benefit from it. If Vacuum tube computers were crap machines, Zuse would probably call anything LLMs  "industrial human waste generators".

Other than that it's just a complete regression. 
Literally the thesis of data mining is that the models should AID us in knowledge discovery, not the opposite.  They have zero interpretability (good luck figuring out why and what the weights are), which you should know by now had you attended a single Machine Learning class.
You will NOT what caused it to do behavior it shouldn't do.
Claude can't even extract a PDF. Expecting it to write anything but basic for-loops or callbacks is just dumb.
Hell, I have seen ChatGPT hallucinate an Arduino library in two different countries and two different timeframes and students all fell for it.

Sorry to break it to you but outside of HackerNews people are increasingly anti-AI. 
But I guess you can peddle AI slop with the hotdogs models, that will show 'em!

The s&box API is authed to by Steam tickets, which you can only get by owning the game on Steam. You can only report play activity for a game when you are authed. You can not report play activity with cracked copies.

Pleased with the reasoned take on AI, nice to see realism when the people isn't trying to sell you something.

Your discovery algorithm is going to be a big deal, so I wish you luck with that.

Best of luck to the team, this is big. It's gonna be rough but y'all have weird enough attitudes to make it work.

I can never predict what Facepunch will do and that means an opportunity to be pleasantly surprised.

Will the issue with main menu freezing every so often be fixed for nvidia users? Idk why it happens to me but i notice this occasional every second freezing on the main menu where the character is visible and it just makes it hard to navigate within ui

Try not to spend too much time appeasing these crazed individuals that are trying to claim FP is some terrible corrupt organisation hellbent on extracting evil profit from hard working devs. You guys are doing amazing work. I work in Unreal Engine every day and it's absolutely miserable. S&box is one of the biggest bright lights in the future of game dev.

And i just have to say, it was a pleasure being a QA tester for your guys game. I look forward to it's future and i really do appreciate it for what it is i just wanted to point out an issue i've been experiencing for the past couple of updates. I don't know if i'm the only one having this issue because no one else seems to point it out so could it be something to do with my drivers being corrupted? Cause i have up to date drivers and i'm on RTX 4060 ti 16 gb model MSI while my cpu being a AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

Congrats guys! i didnt hear about this platform until last week and im very glad i did i ran into lots of issues using other engines due to my knowledge not being where it needed to be i mostly know the basics an have been self teaching myself over the last decade when i had the time so it was always an on off situation for me and felt kinda loast on what else i could do to make my dream of being a developer happen and then i saw a video pop up one day explaining what the editor for this platform was about and revitalized me once again only this time now that ive used the editor going on my 5th day i have done more things then i have ever done in the passed, my passion juices are flowing and i can see my project finally come to life slowly but im doing stuff stuff i couldnt before bc didnt have the smarts but this editor was simple to go through i was able to figure my way around with no issue programming is getting there but i still run into a 1-2 hour issue fix haha. nontheless this editor in the hands of passionate people wanting to become indie is a blessing in disguise. good job boys and gals!  keep up the good work making people dreams come to fruition.
